Long Term Care Services Division

The Long Term Care Division at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute is a 176-bed facility providing intermediate and skilled nursing care. These 176 beds are licensed by the state of New Mexico, dually certified for Medicaid and Medicare participation, and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations (TJC). A portion of the Long Term Care Division is also accredited by TJC as a Dementia Special Care Unit.

What makes our nursing care facility unique is our ability to care for the difficult, hard-to-manage residents who may be mentally ill or behaviorally disordered, but who still require nursing home services. We often receive referrals from other nursing homes around the state asking us to care for those residents they are not able to serve.

The units that make up our Long Term Care Division are as follows:

Meadows 1 – This is a 24 bed unit whose residents are relatively young and/or physically healthy and who have moderate to severe functional disabilities and intermediate to early-late stages of dementia. This is a secure unit.

Meadows 2 – This is a 36 bed unit whose residents are primarily non-ambulatory and require moderate to maximum assistance with activities of daily living and other medical nursing needs.

Ponderosa 1/4 – This is a 58 bed unit with the majority of residents severely impaired with regard to their ability to engage in most self-maintenance and care activities. Many have very severe cognitive limitations. They may or may not be ambulatory and may require limited to total nursing assistance.

Ponderosa 2/3 – This is a 58 secure bed unit whose residents have moderate to severe cognitive and/or functional disabilities. Most have a primary or secondary diagnosis of dementia.
